Baraboo Cold Cocoa Porter

Baraboo Beers are a proprietary brand of the Hy-Vee chain of Midwestern supermarkets.  The beers are contract brewed by Stevens Point Brewery in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. This is a porter made with Zoet chocolate, a chocolate also available at Hy-Vee.

The beer pours black in appearance, some very dark brown on the edges. There is an inch of thick, foamy, tan head. The aroma is fairly mild, with cocoa and dark roasted malt. The taste is dark roasted malt, char, cocoa, dark chocolate. There is some sweetness, but the finish is dry, ending with a light to moderate bitterness. The beer drinks with a soft, yet very intense, carbonation. Nothing wrong with this, but most porters and stouts made with chocolate bore me; I like the ones that get chocolate notes from their malts.
